Why Aren’t Patients Referred for DSMT and Medical Nutrition Therapy?

During the past decade, tremendous strides have been made by national and local diabetes and dietary organizations to achieve improved levels of coverage by health plans for DSMT and medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for people with diabetes. Data from focus groups suggest that the referral rate for DSMT and MNT among primary care physicians remains low. This may be due to lack of awareness of the positive changes in coverage made by many health plans, including Medicare and Medicaid; lack of knowledge about how to refer; or lack of knowledge about where to find a facility for DSMT and MNT.
