Joan Bardsley Joan K. Bardsley, RN, MBA, CDE

Ms. Bardsley is a member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and served on the editorial board of its publication, Diabetes Spectrum. She is currently a member of the subcommittee for the Scientific Session of the ADA. Ms. Bardsley is also a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). She has served on the board of trustees of its Education and Research Foundation and is chair elect of its foundation. She has served as chair of the Annual Meeting, as secretary-treasurer and chair of the AADE Education Foundation and was a founding member of the local chapter of the AADE in Washington, DC.

After graduating cum laude in nursing from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, Ms. Bardsley earned her master's in business administration in marketing and Organizational Behavior from George Washington University.

Ms. Bardsley is a consultant for Novo Nordisk. She has received honoraria from Novo Nordisk and Aventis.



Andrew J. Lee Jr. Andrew J. Lee Jr., MD

Dr. Lee is currently a practicing internist and the Medical Director of MedStar Physician Partners, Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, DC. Dr. Lee has been named to a number of top physician lists, specifically as one of the Washington metropolitan area’s top 200 primary care physicians by the Washingtonian Magazine as well as being listed by the Washington Afro-American Newspaper and the Washington Consumer Checkbook Magazine. He is listed by America Online as one of the regions top doctors in the field of internal medicine. Dr. Lee is currently a member of the American College of Physicians and also serves on the Board of Directors of Wings of the Dawn International institute for Children, an organization that assists in educational projects for African nations.

Dr. Lee has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania. He served as an Air Force Officer for five years and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Award while working as a Space Systems Analyst. He subsequently received a MD degree from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he participated in community lecture series for senior citizens. Dr. Lee completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Washington Hospital Center.



Michelle Magee Michelle F. Magee, MD, CDE
Director, MedStar Diabetes Institute at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC

Dr. Magee oversees diabetes clinical, education, and research programs for seven hospitals in the Washington, DC, area. She is a Principal Investigator for the NIH BARI 2D multi-center study of heart disease with diabetes. Her other research areas of expertise include diabetes education and hospital management. She serves as Director of the MedStar Research Institute's clinical trials unit at Washington Hospital Center, where she is Principal Investigator for diabetes clinical trials. At these facilities,
Dr. Magee is also a staff physician in the divisions of Endocrinology. She is an active member of the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Dr. Magee was a member of the writing committee on management of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia in Hospitals published in Diabetes Care in 2004.

Dr. Magee received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania before earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. Her Residency in Internal Medicine was followed by a Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism, both at George Washington University.

Dr. Magee has received research grants and support from Aventis, Bayer, Care First, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Hewlett-Packard, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals.



Robert Ratner Robert E. Ratner, MD, CDE
Vice President for Scientific Affairs, MedStar Research Institute, and Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director, Georgetown University Medical School General Clinical Research Center, Washington, DC

Dr. Ratner also serves on the University Research Committee of Georgetown University Medical School. He has been a member of the Professional Section of the American Diabetes Association since 1982, and is a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research and the Endocrine Society. He is a charter member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

An experienced, invited lecturer and author of more than 65 original, peer-reviewed, professional articles, Dr. Ratner is a reviewer for Diabetes Care, the Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Diabetic Medicine, and The Diabetes Educator.

Dr. Ratner received his Bachelor of Science degree cum laude from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Ratner completed an Internship in Medicine and Residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor-affiliated hospitals in Houston. In Boston, he completed a Fellowship in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Lahey Clinic/New England Deaconess Hospital, followed by a Chief Clinical Fellowship at Joslin Diabetes Center.

Dr. Ratner has received research grants and support from Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Aventis, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, GMP, Merck, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals.



Mansur Shomali Mansur E. Shomali, MD
Associate Director, Division of Endocrinology; Associate Director, Diabetes and Endocrine Center; and Director of Research, Department of Medicine, Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD

Dr. Shomali is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He is on the Institutional Review Board of MedStar-Baltimore and is the Chairman of the Research Review Committee for the Department of Medicine at Union Memorial Hospital. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Endocrine Society, and the American Diabetes Association.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore,
Dr. Shomali earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, followed by a Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Shomali has served as a consultant for Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, and Aventis, for which he has received honoraria.



Gretchen Youssef Gretchen Youssef, MS, RD, CDE
Program Manager, MedStar Diabetes Institute, Washington, DC

In this position, Ms. Youssef oversees seven ADA-recognized Diabetes Self-Management Programs in the MedStar Health System and works on systemwide research to improve diabetes care. Ms. Youssef is also the program director of the Diabetes for Life Learning Center at the MLK Memorial Library, which targets African Americans with Diabetes. Before holding this position, she was Program Manager of the Diabetes Prevention Program at the MedStar Research Institute on Capitol Hill.

Ms. Youssef is a member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Dietetic Association, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). She is also a board member of Capitol ADE in Washington, DC, the CDR Provider Unit Coordinator for the AADE, and an auditor for the ADA-recognized programs.

Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Penn State University, Ms. Youssef completed a dietetic internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta. She then earned a Master's degree in Health Promotion from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.

Ms. Youssef has received research grants and support from Bayer Diagnostics, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, the Pfizer-Aventis Alliance, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals. She is a consultant for Novo Nordisk.
