Statement of Need

Diabetes mellitus is a complex public health epidemic that will clearly escalate in the future. Estimates indicate that by 2025, approximately 300 million adults worldwide will have diabetes. Despite many advances, the optimal means of restoring and maintaining normoglycemia has yet to be widely implemented. Several factors contribute to this situation. A host of oral antidiabetic agents and insulins are available, and the choice of treatment is complex. This complexity is heightened by the fact that many patients with diabetes have concurrent hypertension and dyslipidemia. In addition, there have been extensive pharmacological advances in these two arenas, which makes the management of a patient with this medical triad a daunting proposition.

This activity presents the highlights of Diabetes Update 2003, a continuing medical education (CME) Conference, held on April 12, 2003, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, physicians should be able to:
  • Identify the pharmacological options available to treat the patient with diabetes in order to optimize glycemic control, and to use these options clinically
  • Utilize information presented to facilitate the therapy of diabetic dyslipidemia
  • Demonstrate the ability to treat the patient with hypertension and diabetes and comprehend the utility of the early use of ACE-inhibitors and ARBs
  • Recognize how to use combination therapy effectively in patients with type 2 diabetes
